“He who vacations at the resort of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, ‘My resort, and my hotel, my God, in whom I trust occasionally.” -Psalm 91:1 & 2 (the version of my flesh).
Hopefully that verse didn’t sound right to you. If it did, welcome to the club! The Lord spoke softly to my heart and revealed something to me: I do not dwell in the shelter of the Most High.
To dwell means to make the Almighty my permanent residence, to live in continuously, to rest there. Sadly, I do not dwell in the shadow of the Almighty–I vacation there. Most days, you can find me at my permanent residence on 1 Flesh St in Fort MyWay. However, when the going gets a little tough on 1 Flesh St, I pack my bags and head to the “Almighty Resort” for awhile. While on vacation I make the Almighty my residence sure, but only until the trouble blows over and I feel it is safe to head on back to Fort MyWay.
I desire the protection and control over life that Fort MyWay offers. I was drawn into this city by the mirage of strong walls and bulwarks, of guarded gates, fresh water, the abundance of food, and the promise of control of all that goes on around me. Upon closer inspection however, Fort MyWay lies in a desolate desert. There is no protection here, there is no shelter, there is no control. It promises much but delivers nothing–and yet, the residents stay.
In contrast, the Almighty is a secure fortress. In this city, the Almighty promises shelter, refuge, a fortress, covering, shields, strong bulwarks, a dwelling place, and rescue (descriptions from Psalm 91). The Almighty delivers on His promises–He has been proven through the ages. His only stipulation is that we dwell here. Not vacation or flee to every now and again, but dwell.
I don’t know if I know how to dwell permanently in the Almighty, but I want to learn. I am tired of fighting for my very existence in Fort MyWay. The Almighty has removed the scales from my eyes and I see what desolation and squalor I have lived in at Fort MyWay. It is time to learn to dwell in the Almighty. What about you? Are you ready to learn to dwell in the shadow of the Almighty?
“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD “My refuge and my fortress! My God in whom I trust!” -Psalm 91:1 & 2
A great reminder !!
