Trusting God When Life Gets a Little too Crazy

February 15, 2016

< back to blog home

Have you ever hit one of those moments in life where you begin to wonder what on earth is going on? You feel like things are spinning out of control and life is moving much faster than you’d like. Maybe you aren’t really sure what direction you’re heading, but you’re being carried along in it anyway.

Sometimes we just have to wonder what on earth God thinks He is doing, you know?

A video popped up in my Facebook feed last week. Maybe you’ve seen it. It’s the one in which a disguised Jeff Gordon takes an unsuspecting car salesman for the ride of his life. If you haven’t seen it, you can watch it here. (full disclosure, the video is absolutely hilarious, but there is a lot of bleeped out language from the salesman as he panics. He also calls out God’s name several times.)

While the video is so funny to watch, my favorite part is at the end. You see, through the whole terrifying ride at high speeds and near accidents, the salesman is in total panic mode. By the time they make it back to the dealership, he’s livid. He threatens to kill (still undercover) Jeff Gordon and heads off to call the cops. But then, Jeff Gordon takes off the disguise and the salesman realizes who was driving the car. And then, as relief floods his face, he asks to take the ride again.

What a difference knowing who the driver is can make.

Panic changes to relief.

Fear to excitement.

Anger to thrill.

Distrust to trust.

Don’t we often feel the same way in this life? Things start spinning out of control, they start moving faster than we had anticipated. Before too long we realize we are on a ride we didn’t exactly sign up for. We panic. Maybe we even ask God who He thinks He is, and what He thinks He’s doing.

But all the while, He maintains complete control of the vehicle. He knows what He’s doing.

What a difference it makes to know who the driver is.

I know in my life, there are some situations that certainly feel like that video. Things are a little bit crazy–and maybe not exactly what I signed up for or expected. Perhaps you feel the same way?

At the start of the year, the Lord pressed this verse upon my heart as my verse for the coming year:

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.

Isaiah 43:19

Sometimes, new things are scary. Maybe even terrifying. And while I know that the Lord is working together good things in the wilderness areas of my life, sometimes it is hard to trust. Sometimes it’s scary. Sometimes it’s hard. Sometimes I feel like He’s moving way faster than I would like. Maybe He’s a little too daring on the curves. And my goodness, what does He think He’s doing?

But in those moments my heart enters that panic mode, I’m reminded that I know who is driving. I know His character. I know His love for me. And He is, after all, the most qualified to be steering my life.

What a difference knowing the driver makes.

Maybe today you are in one of these moments in life. May I encourage you to trust? We know our driver. We know His character. We know His love. We know He is working together good things. And just maybe, when it’s all over and we see the amazing things He’s done, we’ll ask to take that crazy ride all over again with Him.

Father,

Sometimes it’s hard to see what you are working together in our lives. Sometimes we panic as things go out of our control and we struggle to trust You. In those moments, calm our hearts. Remind us of who You are–and of all the areas You’ve led us in and worked in our lives. Give us the courage to trust in You. To release control and trust that You hold it all for us. Give us joy in the journey because we know Your love for us. In your name we ask these things, amen.
